Following the onset of his skin disease, vitiligo vulgaris, Hayato Kurata created this work to address the issues caused by the disease while also conveying positivity by creating clothing that balances the functionality of UV protection and style. Finding inspiration within vitiligo, Kurata focused on the gradation of the sky as a way to depict the disease. Kurata used indigo dye to create this work, intending for the characteristic vivid blue and white pattern resembling the sky to also portray vitiligo. Similar to the way few things in the world can be categorized into “zero” or “one hundred”, Kurata feels that there are gradations within the unique patterns formed on each person with vitiligo. Kurata aimed to convey the fact that although they may be lumped together by words, there are many happenings that cannot be expressed in a single word.
