The work was created using wool from Saako, a sheep that lives on Aichi Farm, and wool that she met as a result of Saako. The main jumper is made from Saako, the bottom and socks are made from the wool of Saako’s son “Keito”, born in 2022, and the hat and scarf are reconstructed from knit items collected from sheep lovers who gather at Aichi Farm.

This year, Saako the sheep turned three years old. I knitted a knit for Saako last year, so I have received two precious years’ worth of wool from her life time. Every spring, the Aichi farm shears the wool and gives us warm wool. And Saako will continue to live. I must continue knitting to pass on the warmth I have received from the sheep.

There are many steps involved in the process of turning the sheared wool from sheep in the spring into clothing. The fabric is washed, dyed, spun, knitted, and woven before we can finally wear it. In the meantime, spring arrives, and I receive the new wool once more. The seasons change, the sheep die, and I will die someday. Sheep, people, and even the sweaters I knit so diligently will one day return to the earth. We live in this way. I want to knit clothes to keep people warm in a world where both sheep and people can live happily.

All of the pieces in this series are hand-spun and hand-knitted from the wool of “Saako,” a sheep she lives on the Aichi Farm. The accent red color is used to dye the yarn ends at the end of the knitting to mark the end of the yarn in case someone will one day knit it again.
