At its heart, this project highlights the dying art of shell craft from Cebu, Philippines. Black lip shells, a byproduct of the food industry, are reimagined as both a symbol of strength and resilience, and a testament to fragility. Drawing inspiration from the protective form of armor and the delicate intricacy of lace, the design reflects this duality, creating a balance between softness and power.
Sustainable textiles are central to this work, with Piñatex, a leather alternative made from pineapple leaf fibers, and Piña Cocoon, a traditional Filipino menswear textile, incorporated into the design.
Ultimately, this project seeks to bridge heritage and innovation, introducing the beauty and resilience of Filipino culture to contemporary fashion. It aims to celebrate and empower Filipino craftsmen and weavers, promoting the sustainability of their livelihoods and championing the value of traditional crafts in a modern context.
